PRESS STATEMENT

European Publishers Award for Photography:
The announcement of the 2010 winner of the Award is delayed.

The European Publishers Award for Photography was established in 1994 and celebrated its 17th year in 2010. Previous winners have included Bruce Gilden, Simon Norfolk, Jeff Mermelstein, Paolo Pellegrin, Jacob Aue Sobol, Ambroise Tézenas and Klavdij Sluban.

The competition requires the submission of a substantial, completed and unpublished photographic book project. The winning project is then published in book form simultaneously by each of the publishers. The 2009 winner was published in six editions in six languages. For several past winners the Award book has been their first publication and has proved to be of significant benefit in the development of their careers. Additionally, in recent years the winning photographer has received a major exhibition of the work during the following Rencontres d’Arles.

As is usual in all such competitions, all participants are required to agree to, and sign their acceptance of, the conditions of the Award when they submit their entry. To enable publication, the photographer is required to assign copyright in a manner which is in accordance with general practice for publishing contracts worldwide.

The competition rules also specifically state that the publishers “will work closely with the photographer but reserve the right to have the final decision on the sequence, the design and on all other matters relating to the publication.”

Throughout the long history of the Award the editorial, design and publication processes have been undertaken in a positive and collaborative manner with each winner working closely with the Project Leader appointed for that year.

The Jury for the 2010 award met in Athens in early May 2010. A winner was selected and advised immediately. Following this, the Project Leader and the photographer began lengthy discussions to prepare the book for publication.

Much time and effort was expended in having the photographer understand and accept the complex process of book design and the relevant editing and sequencing of his work.

Despite having agreed to the terms and conditions of the Award on submission of his entry, the winning photographer ultimately sought to impose his own terms and conditions.

The 2010 Award ceremony was due to be held on the evening of Tuesday July 6th during Rencontres d’Arles. On the afternoon of July 6th the winner emailed the Award’s Project Leader announcing that unless certain of his conditions were met then he would decline the Award. The publishers held an urgent meeting to discuss the issues raised and were unable to accept those conditions. The ceremony was therefore cancelled a matter of hours before the scheduled time.

Consideration is now being given to offering the Award to one of the other shortlisted photographers and an announcement will be made at the earliest opportunity.
