ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE 2010 WINNER
European Publishers Award for Photography:
The European Publishers Award for Photography was established in 1994 and celebrated its 17th year in 2010. Previous winners have included Bruce Gilden, Simon Norfolk, Jeff Mermelstein, Paolo Pellegrin, Jacob Aue Sobol, Ambroise Tézenas and Klavdij Sluban.
The competition requires the submission of a substantial, completed and unpublished photographic book project. The winning project is then published in book form simultaneously by each of the publishers. The 2009 winner was published in six editions in six languages. For several past winners the Award book has been their first publication and has proved to be of significant benefit in the development of their careers. Additionally, in recent years the winning photographer has received a major exhibition of the work during the following Rencontres d’Arles.
The shortlisted photographers for the 2010 Award are:
• Christophe Agou
• Claudio Rasano
• Nikos Markou
• Davide Monteleone
• Stanley Greene
• Serguei Bykov
• Martin Weber (withdrew)
And the Winner is Christophe Agou, for his project:
In the Face of Silence
In the winter of 2002, Christophe Agou began documenting the lives of French family farmers living and working in the Forez region, which lies on the eastern side of the Massif Central. This is the region where he was born and lived until the age of 16, a region for which he still has a deep affection. Agou travelled to the lesser-known parts of the region, where he felt inspired by the silence and moved by the authenticity and charisma of the people he encountered.
Over time, and through the gradual process of building trust and friendship, the farmers and their families accepted him and allowed him to both photograph and film their daily existence. The challenge was to go beyond just documenting their labour-intensive lives and present a deeper, more intimate portrait.
For Agou, the work is a meditation on life and death as well as the silence and solitude that are ever-present in our lives.
Biography
The winner of the 2010 European Publishers Award for Photography, the French born (1969) photographer Christophe Agou, is noted for his personal documentary-style in both black-and-white and colour photography. His intimate images haunt and intrigue at the same time, creating an intensely rich, layered, visual language that triggers thoughts and emotions.
Christophe Agou moved to New York in 1992 and came to prominence with his compelling body of work made in the New York Subway. This work was published as ‘Life Below’ in 2004. In 2006, he was a finalist for both the prestigious Eugene Smith Award, and for Le Prix de la Phortographie de l'Académie des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 2008. He received a 'Mention Spéciale' for le Prix Kodak de la Critique Photographique in 2009. His photographs have been widely published and exhibited at MOMA, New York; Jeu de Paume, Paris; The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston; The Museum of American History, Washington D.C; The Museum of Art Pilar & Joan Miro, Majorca; The Santa Fe Center for Visual Arts; Les Rencontres D'Arles, France and Noorderlicht Fotofestival, The Netherlands.
