This will generally be for projects for consideration for publication from January 2014 onwards.
We are not longer accepting any new FICTION submissions.
We welcome submissions from photographers anywhere and everywhere. But please remember we get literally several hundreds of submissions every year and we can publish very, very few of them. Please make sure that you've looked at all the titles on our web site so that you can get a proper sense of what we publish.
Photobooks are very expensive to produce and the market has got more and more difficult over recent years. Consequently we've had to become rather more cautious. We're increasingly finding that we can only successfully publish established international names, projects with major exhibitions or those that come with sufficient funding to underwrite the risk. There are now only very few first books that we're able to do with emerging photographers.
We have now introduced fixed periods for reviewing work.
Our next open submission period dates are May 20th to 31st, 2013. Please note that submissions received outside our review dates will be held to the next review date which will be no earlier than November 2013.
We're looking for projects of quality, which are fresh, powerful and unique. Publishing schedules mean that we're generally planning at least 12 months in advance. We are publishing books for an international audience and you should consider this when proposing a project. We are unlikely to be interested in something which is too specific to one country or geographical region. Please also remember that we must be able to sell the books that we publish so please be realistic when assessing your project and don't waste your or our time by sending proposals which have only a limited commercial appeal. Just because all your friends say it would make a great book doesn't mean that anyone would buy it.
Because of the number of submissions we receive we simply can not (and will not) meet with you in the first instance. We therefore ask that you submit your project by post in as indicated in the instructions below.
We have a two stage procedure. What we want from you in the first instance is the following
• a brief one page synopsis
• a one page CV
• one of the following;
a set of no more than 12 colour laser copies or inkjet print outs;
or a CD with images presented in slide show format or as PDFs (please note that if you submit digitally there is no limit to the number of images that you can send. You can also send a full digital dummy). PLEASE NOTE THAT WE DO NOT ACCEPT EMAIL SUBMISSIONS.
• A self-addressed envelope with return letter postage.
We will not acknowledge of receipt of your submission nor will we return it. This SAE is for us to respond about your submission once we have looked at it. Please expect the process to take 10 to 12 weeks. If you are from outside the UK then send International Reply Coupons
PLEASE NOTE NONE OF THIS MATERIAL WILL BE RETURNED.
The reason for this is quite simply that we spend too much time repacking material, chasing photographers for payment of return postage costs etc. For this reason we are asking that intially you send in material which can be disposed of once we've looked.
If your work appears to have potential interest for us then we will ask you to make a full submission. This should not be seen as any intention on our part to proceed to publication but simply an our interest in seeing more of your work.
Should we request a full submission then at that stage we will want to see a full sequenced dummy of the work.By which we mean that we need to see the work put together in the sequence that you intend it to be in the book. We don't really like to view slides or exhibition prints and far prefer you to send a set of laser photocopies or inkjet prints. Absolutely nothing should be larger than A3 (22 inches x size and smaller if at all possible.
If we request a dummy submission we will still require you to send full return postage and packaging. Without this we will not be able to return your work. It is also essential that you include proper packaging for the return of your material and that this has your return address written on it. If you're sending in from outside the UK it is important that you check properly what payment you will need to send us.
If you are sending a cheque which is not in sterling and not drawn on a UK bank then you must add £7.00 ($12.00) to the postage costs. This is the amount that we are charged by our bank for cashing non-sterling cheques.
We have introduced the fixed review dates because of the immense number of submissions we receive. Please ensure that you stick to the dates we have advised otherwise your project may not be returned for some months. Please also remember that we can accept no liability for anything that is sent to us. We will however do our utmost to be careful with your materials.
