OLD HAVANA
Claudio Edinger
Texts by Guillermo Cabrera Infanta & Humberto Wernek

With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of Soviet financial support (85% of its economy depended on Eastern Europe) Cuba has struggled to survive. Now its people search for ever more ingenious ways to get by. People queue for no other reason than to sell their placeto others. Newspapers are resold once they have been read. Chickens are raised in apartments and pigs in bathrooms. Prostitution, which the government used to boast had been eradicated, is back stronger than ever. Petrol is watered down for sale on the black market and, with little oil in the country, cars are replaced by bicycles, and tractors by ploughs.

Cabrera Infanta, the foremost Cuban writer today, fought next to Castro in the 1959 revolution but left the regime in the early sixties, dissatisfied and disillusioned. Humberto Wernek is a leading Brazilian journalist who has travelled extensively in Cuba and writes frequently about the country.

MADNESS
Claudio Edinger

Edinger confronts the dark side of mental illness. 'We stand in terror but at the same time we laugh. We see the feeble ridicule of man. We confront our own vulnerability and utter helplessness

Madness is a deeply controversial and disturbing book. Edinger's portraits of the inmates of the massive 3,500 patient asylum of Juquieri in São Paulo, Brazil, are the result of his intense response to living and working in the asylum itself, and his own experience of dealing with the devastating effect of Alzheimers disease within his own family.
