trip photographs by Susan Lipper text: Frederick Barthelme afterword: Matthew Drutt Trip is Susan Lipper’s fictional road trip through America destination, starting point even date unknown. Lipper’s images and the accompanying texts by writer Frederick Barthelme play against each other throughout the book juxtaposing ideas and sensations. Sophisticated, funny and urbane, ‘trip’ re-appropriates the documentary tradition to create a new American narrative that casts us adrift in a world of vernacular objects signs and symbols that read at so many levels. Susan Lipper’s last book Grapevine was critically acclaimed in the States and Europe and her work has been published and exhibited world-wide. Writer, artist, rock musician, Frederick Barthelme is the author of eleven books, the most recent being Bob the Gambler. Matthew Drutt is lead curatorial advisor on photography at the Guggenheim Museum. |
